ϡ - Chapter TwentyThree; In which one deals with tricky spells [video/action for housemates/voice]

[ You can have a view of Helios leaning back in his chair, rather comfortably actually. He's in his room and in said background are scattered papers and objects. Incidentally he doesn't have his glasses on today, might be due to the fact that he's conducting a delicate experiment in his room. Keyword being delicate. If you catch a glimpse of any of the papers in the background it'll make no sense if you can't read runes. Though one in particular has the diagram of a ring with various lines and runic lettering on it. Helios will lean forward smiling at the journal. ]

Ah, I hope it's on. Erm, yes. [ Clearing his throat he still doesn't get these things. He just brings a hand to his chin, characteristic thoughtful pose is go! ]

I wonder...many of you know about magic, of course. But how many of you can actually apply magical attributes to an inanimate object? Like--ah, enchantments! They're rather tricky and if done wrong they can well...blow up in your face- [ Or you colleague's faces. ] -but they can be used for all sorts of things. Like making a sword into a flaming sword by applying a fire spell to said sword, and when the right incantation is spoken it alights!

[ A thoughtful hum. ] Also are there any myths or legends in your worlds based around objects? Like Excalibur, hammer of Thor, or maybe even the holy grail? Just wondering...all out of curiosity. [ And possibly to further his own research, maybe even get some help on the little project he's been doing since Halloween. Except during his little questioning session the spell he was trying to place on said inanimate objects will begin to sizzle in the background. Smoke is going to start clouding the video and sparks can be seen as well. His eyes will widen as he turns abruptly knocking the journal on the floor and turning off the video function but not the voice. ]

Oh! No-no not again. This wasn't supposed to--! [ There's a very loud bang and the room shakes with it. Sorry housemates there will be a spillage of black, with what seems to have shards of diamonds sprinkled throughout it, smoke coming from Helios' room as he slams the door open. Helios' face will also bear the marks of said explosion as he tumbles out of the room, face and clothes covered in black soot, but he at least has journal in hand. Also people over the journals can hear him coughing rather a lot. Before long you'll hear him laughing though, replying rather amused. ] Ah, yes, very tricky!

[ Going to be brushing off the fact that just happened. You didn't hear anything, everything is fine. Okay, well, Frederic and Giles might be a tad bit annoyed. ]

SOS-Brigade? Ah that's, that club here correct? And you're it's chief, well, what can I do for you?

[ If anything at all. ]

You can tell me about your world, and given me magic instruction besides.

You're really interested to know? [ That's excitement tinged in his voice Haruhi. Helios loves telling people about his world almost as much as he likes hearing about others. As for the magic instructing that too is another exciting prospect. He really wouldn't mind either or, but both, well Helios can definately deal with both. ]

I wouldn't be opposed to either! Ah...but where to start. [ Where to start indeed. ]

Start with Atlantis, go from there.

[ Helios doesn't know what he got himself into, did he? ]

Atlantis...ah, yes! Wonderful city, very hospitable despite the whole underwater business. The people looked half-fish like and half human...when they wanted to look that way. They obviously had magic or, or technology capable of sustaining their entire city underwater. Like it was enclosed in a giant air bubble! It was all very fascinating.

So you've been there personally?! And when you say half-fish have human do you mean merpeople, or fishpeople? For that matter, what do you mean by "wanted" - they can shift? Can merpeople walk on two legs? Do you break water or air- well no it's in a bubble so of course it's air but then why would they be merpeople? And you don't know which between magic and technology?! Not even a guess?!

Oh yes! It was important business I had to attend to, and well it's only common courtesy to pay a visit. Merepeople actually and yes they can change form. They use there fish forms mostly for travel ah, underwater. The human form is for land travel. As for the air bubble you'd be surprised how many ship wreck survivors are there! They let people stay for a few weeks, sometimes months to recover. And, well, they knew I was visiting so they might have made accommodations.

As for the-the magic and technology...I can safely say it's definately magic they use. Some water based spells and cloaking spells to keep out of the public eye. But I'm not one for technology so I can't really say.

Important business with the Atlantians, huh? And what might that be?

Schooling, actually. Well I was trying to see if any of them would like to teach or even participate in helping at my school.

Well then tell me about your school! It's got to be something special, right?!

Oh I don't know. It's simple enough what with the normal classes, albeit I've added a few of my own like mythology and the like. [ A thoughtful hum. ]

You could say that...if you look hard enough you might be able to see how special it is. If you believe in myths and those sorts of thing.

So you have a school to teach students about the reality of mythological beings?

Yes the class is meant to do just that, reinforce the myths and all. But it's more like lending a helping hand for them to come to believe in the mythologies in my world. To help them realize that they're not as scary or fake and that they need us as much as we need them.

I can only do so much when it comes down to it. The rest is up to them in the long run.

Why do mythological beings need normal people?

Well you could say that people's beliefs and power in said belief gives mythological beings strength. Like...ah, gods for instance. Gods didn't exist until humans conceived them in the creation myths, correct? However gods in my world existed before said creations myths but had no way of being brought into our plane of existence. Until, that is, people began to believe in them. So they were sort of trapped and withering away essentially.

[ He pauses before continuing. ]

Naturally the gods, Greek, Roman, Catholic, Japanese all of them put their own twists on the creation myths for themselves and their respective religion. They then put said myths into certain people's heads as ideas, and then once people started preaching them and believing in them they gained enough power to come into our world and feed on the magical energy stored on Earth. And the gods obviously helped their worshipers; so in a way it's a mutual relationship of sorts. A gift from them would be magic! Before gods magic was used poorly, or not as effective as it could have been. Once the gods, and mythological beings, began teaching people it was sort of an...unbreakable relationship really.

[...Okay so basically, if you believe a myth it makes it real, but myths were real before then? She considers this a bit, trying to figure out the meaning here. It seems overly complex and there has to be some sort of contradiction here. Hum. She starts to gum after a spell and then finally shakes her head]

So "gods" are extraplanar beings that gained power based on people's believe in them, assuming that I'm understanding that correctly?

Yes that's correct. In order to cross over they needed...an extra push I suppose and that was what belief helped in doing. They can exist in more than one plane unlike ourselves. Therefore they appear godlike and of a higher power.

Then shouldn't some of those - the Mayan or the Egyptian ones in particular - have poofed out by now due to lack of worship/interest for a long span of time?

Yes unfortunately that is the case for some of the older gods. Albeit there are still some worshipers which helps. Summoning or even trying to contact them is very difficult and not advised. But their remnants still linger, turned into magic that we all can use, so it's not as if they're completely gone.

Okay so following that is it a synergy thing or cause-effect? Does a god create the faith that creates the god, or does the faith strictly create the god? Because if it's the later, is there some weird Scientology deity floating around?

Synergy. We are working together after all. The gods definately created the faith. Since none of them actually created the Earth and the creation myths were all of their own devising. They used that means of coming into existence after all.

[ They basically lied, isn't that nice? ]

Scientology? I haven't met the god of that. Though it'd probably be rather interesting. [ Hm. ]

I'm pretty sure there's no Scientology deity since it was man made after all. Although it might be hard to tell, all things considered. But to my knowledge I haven't heard anything from the gods I have spoken with.

But there's more than creation myths - what about the sort of stuff after, you know... inter-god wars in Norse myths, or the heroes in Greek ones, or some of the stuff you hear about in the Qur'an? Hell, even most of the Japanese gods have things beyond creation. Orihime and Hikoboshi?
