folklorist | ϡ - Chapter Eight; A Midsummer Night's Read

( Four days will quickly steep themselves in nights;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow
New bent in heaven, shall behold the night
Of our solemnities.

A woman will be portrayed, followed by a yellow moon and glistening stars filling an otherwise blackened void of a sky. )

[ If you're in the library today you can find Helios seated at one of the tables with his face neatly plastered to a book. Rainy days are always good days to read it seems, and today is no exception! However if anyone passes by him during his re-reading of a certain play they'll see varying figures playing out their roles, and the play itself, as he reads through it. So you'll basically get a free show via his mind! Reading yet another portion of A Midsummer Night's Dream in his head will promptly be dictated to you all, via voice transmission because Helios fails and always has his journal by him or unintentionally open, and anyone walking by will see the golden text scrolling above his head, with pretty pictures of characters to boot. ]

( And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearnéd luck,
Now to escape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long:
Else the Puck a liar call.
So good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.

A figure akin to this is then portrayed. )

Ah- oh no! Haha! That'd be wonderful to actually do it again though! It was...a certain circumstance. (Apep's revival and all that.)

I know someone who can time-travel at will. She, um... tends to cause a lot of trouble, though.

... It's probably just as well that more people don't have that ability.

You're certainly right about that. It's a rather powerful ability to uphold, should someone have it. The possibilities alone could drive anyone to doing something they regret. To be able to alter events...even people's lives.

(It is tempting, though, especially if mistakes have been made.)

... That's why I don't like magic.

I can see why. Being exposed to it like that certainly doesn't help our case. But, you know, not everyone uses it for their own benefit. We definately could, couldn't we? But- it's not responsible, or meaningful, to do such a thing. I try to teach people that we really don't want to use it for that purpose. [ He laughs but a sigh is heard afterwards. ]

There's still a long way to go however.

[That does seem reasonable. It's not like Don goes around ninja-ing people just because he can.]

I just don't like the idea that someone can cause so much destruction with so little effort.

Mm it is a very scary thought, especially when you have people you care deeply about that could possibly be in danger. Though magic takes more effort than you think! It's a tiring business depending on the magnitude of the spell.

{Probably true. It only looks effortless because the people using it know what they're doing.}

I don't know... certainly people can do terrible things without any kind of supernatural ability, but there just seems to be something about magic that lends itself to abuse.

With great power comes great responsibility as the saying goes. Perhaps it's because the illusion that it is not physical and therefore requires little exertion leads to such abuse. Hm. Magic is also infinite in supply, with no known restraints for its users.

(Except that itself in not entirely true.)

Maybe. The study of magic seems to attract a disproportionate number of power-seekers. As opposed to, for example, martial arts or pyrotechnics.

[ A small sigh manages to make its way across the transmission. ] Unfortunately you're right in some regards. I wish...it weren't true, but there are some who use it for their own personal gain and amusement.

I would say it depends on the person, but it also depends on their environment as well.

I guess people are people, magic or not. Those who want to destroy will always find a way.

You might be right, but I like to think that people can change. We all have the option and ability to do so, whether we do however is up to us.

For me. My world isn't friendly to - well, to anything out of the ordinary.

I don't mind. It's a nice change. Not having to keep secrets.

Oh it is. But as to everyone else, I mean regular people with no such abilities, its still a touchy subject that people fear. As the saying goes people fear that which they cannot explain. [ Sigh sigh. ]

Which the main reason I...reopened the school.
