folklorist | ϡ - Chapter FiftyTwo; Let's talk about magic [action|voice]

[ Today Helios can be found in his usual haunts. He’ll take a day off from the library to practice his magic in the afternoon after school. Anyone near the edge of town of by the lake will hear and see crackles of thunder, loud bangs of fire and flashes of light erupting along the coastline of the lake itself. It’s out of the way enough that it won’t affect anyone but people can still see it from the edge of town. There’s a few targets made of clay, dirt, and mud all around the area should anyone actually venture out to see what’s going on. Each clay figure is sporting different elementally inflicted wounds. Helios himself has a worked up a good sweat at least and he’ll wipe his brow free before going to his journal. He’ll be standing in the middle of it all with a satisfied look on his face. ]

I was wondering if anyone would like to have a spar. Ah, well, a magical one that is. I-I’ve been neglecting my duties to practice for a while now, and since the weather is nice today I thought it’d be good to get some practice in. [ The Battle Dome scares him, okay? Otherwise he would have used that to train but…how does he technology? ] I’m by the lake if anyone would like to join me for a few one on one sessions. [ And here he’ll pause for a moment before continuing to talk. ]

But beside that. There’s a magic club here that I-I’ve also been neglecting, which is unfair to the members who joined it some time ago. I was wondering if anyone would like to meet, perhaps this Saturday by the beach. I’ve been meaning to get some ideas and thoughts about a certain flying ship, but I haven’t actually made much progress on my own. I-I’d really love to chat and speak with you all again, new arrivals are welcome to stop by as well. It’s pretty much open to everyone, really, there’s no limitations even if you’re not a magic user yourself. There will be food and drink as is customary for our meetings. So bring yourself and a healthy appetite!

[ Some people just like learning about it and that’s fine too. ] So I-I’ll be in touch and you can always contact me via the journals if you wish to speak in private! Thank you for your time and f-for listening. I’ll be out at the lake for a little while longer, so there’s no need to rush.

[ It helps him think out here, the peace and quiet and solitude of it all. So many things have happened recently especially at house 44. Yunna leaving this morning is the main thing in particular and Valentine’s Day was still lingering in his mind as well. He just needs a momentary break from it to clear his head. ] ]

[Cliff was mostly after a change of pace, but he recalled Helios as being a kind, if quiet, man. Anyone who was friends with Rei was good in his book.]

Ah, I see...

Tell me, how would you go about setting up the power conduits for your....ah, what were they? The 'ley lines'? To power your ship.

Mm well it would depend on whether or not we could create artificial foci for the ley lines to spread out from. But ley lines are powerful sources of magic in my world. They help power basic magical machinery not that, that there's many of those left in modern day technology. But, ah, they're a good source of power especially for rituals and things of that nature. [ Of course they would be used entirely for powering the ship should this pan out. ]

[Headscratch. Cliff was getting the feeling that this was more complicated than he had originally anticipated.]

Alright, I've got a few more questions. How would you set one of the lines up, and how do they work to power these machines?

[ It is definitely more complicated than it looks and sounds. ]

Ah, well, that's the tricky part. We'd have to essentially make our own man made foci and-and distribute the magic throughout the enclosure. Since I don't know if this planet even has its own ley lines to speak of, let alone ones we can even tap into. But once that's figured out- [ and boy that's gonna take awhile ] -we could use a crystal or-or some other stone to affix it to the lines and act as a navigational unit for the ship. Keeping the ship up shouldn't be too terribly hard either. You could always just create sigils for constant air flow to keep it afloat and those sigils could be linked to the s-stone. The ley lines would provide the constant source of power and should something go amiss there's the people on board to help.

[It was a good thing that their conversation was audio-based, otherwise Helios would have seen Cliff staring at the book with a look of almost childish perplexity, as if he were a middle grade math student who accidentally walked into a calculus course.]

I see....

[He sighed, scratching his head.]

I thought there might be something I could help with on an engineering angle, but it's starting to sound like some other help is in order.

[There was a break, a thoughtful hum, and a faint click as Cliff checked his ever present-- though useless-- quad scanner out of habit, wondering if the garbled data would be able to provide some kind of answer.]

We've also gotta keep in mind that, even if there are any ley lines around, they could be thrown outta whack by the Shifts that're all over the place. And, if you set one up, it could be wrecked the next time those guys outside try to screw with us.

Oh no! Don't think that you can't offer up any assistance because it's magic related. There's tons of mechanical and structural things that'll need to be implemented as well. Magic is just one part of the whole. [ Helios isn't gonna deny any help he can get. ]

But yes. Someone else brought that up as well. I think having precautionary measures in place for that sort of thing is a definite must.

[Cliff knew that he would need to see the whole plan before he was able to offer any real assistance. Even college level physics would be a boon in this world, provided that they could get all of the supplies that they needed to make this airship go.

He hummed thoughtfully.]

...Call me crazy, but if you work it right then you might not need protection from those Shifts.

How so? I-I mean if the shift is only affecting magic then we could bypass it with having a back up engine and such. But it if affects both technology and magic... [ Well that's a bit of a problem. ]

[Why else would Cliff have given the disclaimer?]

I was thinking that it'd be cool if we can find a way to use them to our advantage. They scew with so many things 'round here, but who's to say that we can't try to screw the system right back?
