ϡ - chapter thirteen; rememberance [action|written]

[ Around mid-afternoon Helios will be making his way across town with a small bundle of flowers in his hands. It might seem a bit odd, random even, but today is a rather...hard day for him; regardless he does have a small smile on his face as he makes his way through town. There's soft hum coming from his lips, absentmindedly and almost indistinguishably if you're not close enough. It's a soft melody and peaceful, or as peaceful as he can manage it to be. He has his journal with him just in case anything goes wrong.

He pauses momentarily at the edge of town, looking back almost as if he's thinking of making a post but...he decides against it for now. And then he turns and heads off into the forest.

He'll return later with one lone flower still in between his fingers and some dirt on both pant legs and his hands. He takes a seat by the fountain in the town square idly looking at his journal and of course the flower he is twirling unmindful with his pointer finger and thumb of his left hand.
]

If you could go back and change one event in your life, would you? Or would leave it as a reminder or perhaps a lesson learned? History is known for teaching us our past mistakes and also to be used in helping us in the future as well. History repeats itself as the saying goes.

That's a pretty large question.

[Naoki's heading through the plaza about the time he spots Helios and slows with a blink. He changes course from the grocery to head toward him, glancing briefly, curiously, at the flower between his fingers.]

Hey, Helios.

But why would you ever bother changing the insubstantial things? Surely...surely the substantial changes are the one worth making?

[Walking through the village centre, Buffy stops. The fountain is one of her favourite places to sit and absorb some of the atmosphere and--so, she does. Far enough away to be polite, but close enough to remark:]

They'll all be gone, soon. The flowers--I mean. Hello, Autumn.

[Naoki offers a small smile in return, making his way over.]

I'm better. [A beat--] He came back, a few days afterward.

I used to know the girl who ran it. Before she left, I mean. [A slight shrug, a smile.] And I guess time flies when you're having not-fun?

There are things I would change. But there are also things I would leave as they were.

I think it depends whether or not the event in question actually taught a lesson, or whether or not it was just a senseless tragedy.

Been through both, unfortunately. Side effect of living in a place like Sunnydale.

If there was nothing you could have done to prevent the event, then there can't really have been a lesson to it.

On the other hand, looking back, it's all too easy to see things you could have done differently.

[Naoki nods firmly. Not in the best of shape, still not, but--] Yeah. And he remembers everything, which is even better.

[Naoki's eyes dart a little to one side. You really do know how he gets, Helios. He's been nothing but a coil of nerves and worry since Richard got back and his friends were kidnapped.]

I'm trying not to. Richard won't let me, I don't think. [A bit of a laugh.]

[What a question. Especially one for Poland who really sort of wishes he could change history sometimes. It takes him a while to say something, but he feels he has to say something about this, which actually shows the rare serious side of this guy.]

If I changed stuff, I would still be strong and none of the bad stuff would have happened to me. I'd still be powerful and people would be okay. But if nothing changed, I wouldn't have learned stuff either. I wouldn't be...me? The today me. I don't know. Either way things kind of suck.

Yes, I suppose it would. Even if the mistakes you made were minor, you owe it to everyone not to make them again. [And Giles has to pause, at that - three people close to him have died all because he did something wrong] I suppose the lesson isn't always obvious, then.

Helios, are you all right? What's brought this on?

I once tried to help someone even though she warned me not to and it... didn't end well. If I could change things... I would listen.

[Sob, Naoki is such a open book. >: He wanders closer now to the fountain, takes a seat lightly next to him.] Mm, we will. [A beat--he looks at that flower.] Anything on your mind, Helios...?
