folklorist | ϡ - Chapter FortyTwo; Mythica in a winter wonderland. [action|voice]

[ Good afternoon Luceti; if you’re in town today you’ll notice some large lumbering pure white figures walking or flying about. No they aren’t harmful in the least, although the creatures they take after might argue otherwise, and they are not yetis or other such things that come out in the thickest of snowfalls. What they are the products of one derpy headmaster feeling the Christmas cheer thanks to the effects the Malnosso have put in place and him waking up very early in the morning after the snowfall last night to make said creatures. There will be various mythological snow creatures walking about today though none of them can make much noise or do much of anything, they’re pretty docile actually and if you wanted to you could probably even ride on top of them; they won't mind, really! There will be a dragon with icicles for horns and teeth in the town plaza and it'll greet people who enter the town with a happy flick of its tail. Helios will be there for a good portion of the day also making a majestic Griffin, and a snow unicorn. That’s not to say these are the only things that’ll be popping up. Other mythological creatures might be seen around as well. Phoenixes, mandrakes, minotaurs, kitsunes, Kodama in the more forested areas and even a Nue. The list is really endless and Helios has been having too much fun doing this again this year. There's a stand nearby as well with hot chocolate and other warm beverages as well. As for the mythologies most of them will be life sized but nothing too extravagant or outlandish. The tallest would be around ten or so feet tall, while others miniatures in size. They’ll all be moving and just mulling about and you can be sure they’re movements are quite like the real things if you’ve ever encountered one.

The mythologies can be interacted with through the entire day with Helios sometimes in accompaniment. And later into the afternoon Helios will be found in the town square with his snowy dragon companion making your standard issued snowmen, each one getting their own complimentary hat, scarf, and pipe. He'll take a break and eventually pull out his journal for a short little network post. Maggir and Luminair aren’t with him, due to the cold, but the snowy little dragon following Helios around sure does resemble his baby dragon back at home! ]

Ah I love it when it snows like this, there’s an ethereal sort of calm that comes with snowfall don’t you think? The way it falls silently and blankets everything in white...it’s rather beautiful and it’s come just in time. I was wondering if we were going to get any this year. [ He sounds pleased that they have though. ]

If, if anyone remembers from last year...I-ah, made a bunch of-of snow mythica around the town. S-So if you run into any today don’t be alarmed! They’re made purely out of snow a-and they're very friendly too! They tend to, um, take after the one wh-who makes them. [ Clearing his throat now. ]

If anyone has any other creatures from their own worlds they’d like to make and animate, I can certainly take requests! You’re more than welcome to ask too, don’t be shy! I do love making snowmen and it’s almost Christmas! Spreading the holiday cheer is what it’s all about right about now! Santa would probably be proud, he is a very kind and generous sort of man; he always was very good with giving out the compliments, too. Speaking of myths...has anyone heard about a being called Yuki-onna? It’s one of the better known ones in my world, Japanese in origin, but they stories describe her as a tall and beautiful woman with black hair and blue lips. She's said to be quite cold, figuratively and literally, but she also has a more motherly and good side to her too. The Snow Queen is another one, based on Yuki-onnas, and then there's even Jack Frost too! Jack Frost is...well, he's a personification of cold and crisp winter weather. He's also a variant of Old Man Winter, but the important thing to note is that Jack Frost symbolizes the youthful nature and wonder of children playing in the snow. And then there's Kuraokami, a dragon of rain and snow in Japan. He's quite the talker as well, but very good at ice sculptures. I learned that the hard way.

[ Helios laughs because that was a bad bet to get into. He totally knows this from experience guys. Not like anyone is surprised anymore. ]

I wonder if Santa will stop by Luceti too. Ah, well, that’s left to speculation at this point. It makes you wonder if the people here had someone like him to go around and give presents to them too. Or if they even had a holiday like Christmas at all. [ So many questions, so many left unanswered! ]

I do hope everyone has a good holiday though; you can never get too into the spirit of things.

[ Finally around later in the evening all the snow mythica will go back to being their snowy, sculptural selves, and can be found throughout the village in regal more natural poses. ]

Then show me the spell, and I'll see if I can work it out on my own.

[She folds her hands into her jacket, smiling]

[ Helios will draw the enchantment's sigil in the freshly fallen snow with a gloved hand. The symbol itself glows a little with a yellow light, before going out. Helios smiles as he looks back at Rei. ] There we go. That's the sigil you'll need. There's a corresponding incantation that goes with it as well.

[ Buuut Helios thinks that Rei can figure that out on her own. It'll be a nice little challenge for her to partake in over the holidays and new year. ]

So it's a test?

[Rei eyes the sigil, committing it to memory fairly easily. She bends down and draws it out herself.]

Is that correct? And is the incantation in one of the books you gave me?

Yes that's right. [ A warm smile as he looks over what Rei has drawn. It was almost exactly identical to his own, which seemed promising. ]

In one of the books you have it should be in there. And the incantation might need to be translated as well. It's probably going to be in either runic or, ah, Latin. [ Another little twist to make it a bit harder. ]

Is that all? Really?

[Rei...actually puts a hand on her hip with a hint of a cocky smile. Latin was easy for a girl attending a prestigious private Catholic school.]

Perhaps there's a bit more. [ Helios gives her a wry smile as he looks back at the young woman. ]

Perhaps there might be a few spells affixed to the book and you have to figure out how to take them off. But I'm not quite certain on that fact just yet. [ Who knows! If it's magical practice Rei wanted, Helios can certainly oblige and disarming spells is something that they've gone over at least twice in their studies. ]

Well, I'm sure I'll figure it out with time.

[She beams at him, quite pleased]

They aren't the sort of thing that will explode, are they?

[ Helios blinks in surprise at that question. And then after a few moments he just laughs. ] Heaven's no, Rei. I'd never do that. They're just simple locks, like one you fit with a key, only these are spells.

[Rei giggles]

Helios-san...I was joking! I know better than that.

[ Helios can't help but laugh as well. Of course he knew she was joking. But you know...the kitchen incident was quite an infamous one. ] O-of course! Well I think you'll find this to be quite the puzzle to piece together!

[ Helios will scoop up a bit of snow and throw it up into the air. From there it'll spin and twirl in the cool breeze before settling. ] Did you have any specific mythica in mind?

Then I'll get back to you about it soon.

[She looked at the snow, finger tapping her chin in thought.]

Can you make a tengu?

A tengu? I think I can manage something. Let's see...

[ And here Helios will get to work on said tengu. It's gonna be a bit rough but it'll end up looking similar to the creature in question. Add a little magic to help flesh it out more and one snow tengu coming right up! ]

[Rei beams at the snow creature, eyes delighted. It's a reminder of home, and a bit of her grandpa.]

That's lovely! Goodness, thank you!

[ Helios gives a beaming smile right back. He draws the sigil on the tengu's arm and it'll flicker to life. Moving stiffly at first and then more fluid as the time passes on. ]

I'm glad you like it. I've never made a tengu before. At least he came out alright!

Well, they aren't terribly common...

[She watches it move, smiling]

But yes, a fine job.

Very true. Even in my own world there's only a few families of tengu left. But they keep to themselves, it's hard sometimes to contact them.

[ Helios smiles. ] I'm glad you like it.

It's perfect.

Have you spent much time with them? Do...they attend your school?

[Rei...almost sounds jealous]

Oh yes. There's a good few to them that go to the Academy. But, ah, like I said many of them are a bit...shy. Especially to be seen among humans, many clans don't find that to be proper or-or a good idea.

Right. I have heard that. They haven't been seen in a long time in my world. Most people don't believe in them anymore.

It's a similar situation in my own world. Belief is...something of an energy source to mythica on my Earth. I guess that's why so many of them have, ah, gone missing. [ He sounds dour and sad upon saying that. Losing beings like that in a world is...rather hard and sad to know. Many people go through their lives without the knowledge of that fact. And so many mythologies lose their lives because of it. ]

Gone...missing? How do you mean?

Ah, well, some of them decided to go back to their own planes of existence. Some of them couldn't really do that, with the lack of power from the loss of belief in them. I suppose they just...started to disappear and become reclusive.

That's...very sad. I hope that they're able to find a place...

I hope they'll be able to find a place as well. But I'm sure for slightly immortal races they'll manage and-and adapt as they always have. We're very much like them and they are like us in those regards.

[ Living. Learning. Adapting to an ever changing life and place. ]

That's true.

[Rei shivers in the cold a bit.]
