folklorist | ϡ - Chapter Forty-One; a new beginning [forward dated to the afternoon]

[ Anyone nearby the bridge by House 47 and House 35 will see the droids unceremoniously drop a rather disgruntled and startled blonde man into the river. Helios wasn’t awake fully at the time, but he sure is now! He is just going to sputter and flail a bit in the water before making his way towards dryer land. Helios is totally not amused by this guys, especially since it's kinda cold out. The water is also an odd shade of purple…and that grass is blue. He is just…really confused, because nothing is the right color and he’s slightly panicking from this revelation. It must be a side-effect…it has to be. And once he finally runs into people, he'll notice a strange and alarming aura around each individual person. It's a side-effect from John's tampering with his death penalty.

He’ll groggily get up and wring out his long sleeve shirt and jacket, huffing and mumbling under his breath. Not the graceful or nicest of re-entries to the enclosure. You can find Helios walking through the village, soaking wet and a bit miffed, back to his house. And once he gets there he’ll get settled, changed, and make a voice entry.]

I’m, ah, b-back. Thank you f-for whoever took care of the Library in my absence. Everything is well, aside from seeing things in c-color again. Surprisingly…strange and saying that is rather odd too. [ A laugh on his end. There’s a rattling noise from somewhere off in the distance. Luminair’s chirps get excited and happy as Helios gives a surprised gasp. ] Oh! Gods , is it really that time already? I-I didn’t even realize…though the time it takes is far less than your own.

[ Helios clears his throat, his tone slightly more jovial and happy than before. ] It’s a pleasure to meet all the new arrivals we’ve gotten these past few weeks. I hope everyone hasn’t had too much t-trouble settling in. The library is free to use for anyone who wants, and we also have a bookclub that meets once a month. Also if anyone has any questions about the spirits of this place, or m-magic in general, I ah wouldn’t mind assisting you in learning. There’s also a m-magic club that meets every once in awhile too! [ Some more rattling as Luminair chirps more emphatically. ]

Oh, dear, I-I wonder if it’ll last until tomorrow… [ A tapping noise as he taps a pencil on the table. ]

Ah. I-I was wondering…how many people would be interested in seeing a newborn dragon hatch? I-I think this calls for a little celebration, don’t you think Luminair? [ A happy chirp in reply is heard from somewhere off in the room. ]

If anyone wants to stop by tomorrow to see the hatching…I wouldn’t mind having a small little get together! I could make some food and-and a cake too. Anyone is welcome to come by house forty-four. We could all benefit from a little celebration once in awhile, hm?

((ooc; For Helios' return effect he is seeing people's auras, along with seeing the world in weird colors and shades. The auras that Helios are seeing, are just different facets to a person's personality. If you don't want him to see someone's aura just let me know and we can work around that! ))

[Rei shudders a bit as she remembers the lake and last summer's incident with the Mordicant, but nods.]

The beach would be a good place to go, I think. Does the season make any difference? Or the...elemental affinity of the user?

[ Helios doesn't see the shuddering otherwise he might have asked. Instead he taps his chin with a finger. ] I doubt the seasons do, though to be fair I'm not really sure. It's something worth investigating at any rate. But the affinity of the user plays a key factor in contacting them...

[ He hums a little. ] Though I think if you try hard enough that can be overridden.

Maybe...though water is my complete opposite.

[In more ways than one, being Sailor Mars and all]

But I can channel it a little. I hope the ocean helps. Have you thought of any more combinations?

Perhaps back home that's true. But...well I think if you tried you might be able to gain Sona's attention. The ocean will help though s-so that's probably the best place to start.

[ A pause as he thinks on that. ] Cold fire. Lightning and water. Maybe even something combining earth and water too. I've given the first two a good few tries before, but the last one I haven't considered.

How about combining...earth and fire?

[That sounds intriguing]

Earth and fire, hm. Like a volcano you mean? In theory it would be possible to do...

Nothing so big, but maybe...a geyser of some sort? And the possibility of combining it with the spells I've learned from you...could be interesting.

That could be arranged, yes. It's keeping the water constantly flowing that would be the tricky part. But...geysers setup as a defense around the town wouldn't be so bad. [ Hm, it's a thought. ]

Is that something we could make sigils for?

Hm. It's possible to do that, yes. It wouldn't take all that much effort either, since the desired effects are easy enough to replicate just on their own. Sigils that use elemental attributes are far easier to draw out than those that create more...ambiguous effects.

Do you think you could show me the sigils for it? I've found those a bit easier to manage than the verbal spells, really. They're more similar to ofuda.

Oh! Of course I wouldn't mind that at all. [ Helios pauses as he thinks for a few moments on the sigils to use. It's been awhile since he's actually used such sigils, but a little mental concentration and he's finally got it. ]

Ah, that's right. The first one would be like this. [ And here Helios will bend down and start drawing this sigil in the dirt. ]

And then all you have to do is combine it with this one... [ and here he'll draw another sigil slightly different but along the same lines as the other. ] That should give you the desired effect.

[Rei watches, committing them to memory.]

How do you combine them, exactly?

A simple line drawn from east to west will do. It has to be as straight as possible too, in order to ensure a more perfect synchronization.

[Rei sketches the sigils in the dirt from memory, pretty much perfectly, as one might expect from a student of ancient calligraphy.]

And a line...like this? [She adds it]

[ Helios watches and nods at Rei's final sigils. They were very well done for her first time writing these sorts out. ]

Yes that's exactly right! You're quite the natural at sigil drawing. Most people need to practice for years to get it to look so neat. [ Even his own sometimes is pretty mediocre. ]

[She smiles at the praise, but shrugs]

They aren't much different from kanji. Once I see them, I have no trouble, usually.

Well runes are certainly like it. But it's still hard for people to memorize at the beginning. I think you'll be fine to start learning more intricate sigils.

Do you? Um, do you have a spellbook I could practice with?

Of course! I wouldn't mind letting you practice with one. I know, ah, Haruhi and Spock have one. I'm sure I can find another, or somehow make a copy of it.

Haruhi-san and Spock-san are your students?

[She's a bit surprised...]

And I'd love that. I think...sigils might come naturally to me, given my heritage, and how ofuda works.

Oh! Yes. Haruhi has been for quite some time. I recently gave her an exam on everything she's learned so far. Perhaps I could do the same for you and, ah, Spock. [ It is surprising, but Helios can't decline helping people out with magic. ]

That's probably the case, really. I-I mean symbols are easy if you're used to writing them. Sigils are really just large depictions of symbols. [ He shrugs and smiles back at her. ]

I think you'll do just fine.

Of course. I've been studying very hard. If you give me a study-guide...then I'll definitely be willing to take a test.
