ϡ - Chapter ThirtyEight; Interested questions [Action|Voice] (backdated to the 18th)

[ Helios has just gotten back from his most recent mission and he has comeback with a bit more than a few scratches. He’ll be making his way back towards house forty-four as he was deposited in the town square with his makeshift sling. His arm was broken in the final day’s fight and he might have some slash marks across his upper torso from shift hunters. He looks bruised, worn, and extremely tired for a man of his age far too old and far too gone to ever get back his lost youth. And yet, and yet he still manages to smile and keep on going. But he’s not going to make mention of those injuries delivered by the shift hunters or the nightmares that are likely to follow tonight. He should really not sleep at the house but he has nowhere else to stay. Maybe the clinic could work…

His arm he can’t really hide, although, he does stop by the clothes shop to pick up a new coat to hide his arm under. There’s stiffness to his step as he makes his way back to House 44 most likely too out of sorts to really try to go off the well trotted path, making him a very easy target. He’ll walk slowly inside, making sure not to disturb anyone as he enters. It’s only in the afternoon where his voice will come over the journal. ]

It’s strange isn’t it? Knowing how small ones planet can be here. I-I mean there are so many other places and beings here from worlds unknown. It makes you wonder just who is out there on this planet as well. S-So many other villages probably and who knows if there’s other versions of ourselves or even p-people we know in our worlds. I-I’m not sure if there can be two versions of one person in the same plane of existence. I’ve known it to happen and nothing good has ever come of it unfortunately. If you met yourself one day…and you were an entirely opposite person it would be strange, wouldn’t it?

[ A pause as there’s a finger tapping against a table on his end. A sigh before the tapping stops and there’s some shuffling as a book in taken out of a shelf and then placed on the table with a thump. The turning of pages fills the silence for a short amount of time before there’s another reply. ]

They say seeing ones doppelganger is an omen. I’m not sure if that’s true or not but…has anyone ever encountered something like a double of themselves before? There are myths and legends in my w-world about them but, well, I’d be curious to know if anyone else has something similar. Fetches, Fylgia, vardøgers. Ah. There are so many instances of doubles.

Oh! Yes before I forget. [ Said with a tiredness to his voice which is masked underneath all that excited air. ] Speaking of myths and legends the book club has been on an-an extended hiatus these past few months. But, well, I’ve recently taken up the duty of running the library a-and well the book club as well. A-Anyone who has an interest to read or loves to do so is very much welcomed to join us; we meet on the third Thursday of every month. It’s open to everyone here of course and I might be trying s-something new for this next meeting of ours. Especially to all you newcomers out there I-I’m sure you’re all wondering what there is to do here. We, um, d-do try to make things for people to join in on this is one such case. A-And if there’s anything either I or anyone else in Welcome Center can do to help don’t hesitate to ask! [Not as though Helios can be of much help right now as it is. But that's hardly ever stopped him before. ]

It’s, um, a pleasure meeting you all and welcome to Luceti. I-I know it's probably hard, getting used to this place, but everyone here is very nice s-so there's no harm in asking questions or needing help doing something. We're all very open towards helping one another.

[ Some sort of higher man of business, what that business is Helios can't guess. Perhaps he's a well known honest man. Or something entirely opposite. There's a lot of professions that someone would want, depending on the person, Helios wouldn't automatically think thief or con man. Those aren't things he normally sees at least. ] Fiction...

[ That makes him shiver on his end. Having more than one person know about his history makes his stomach drop. It makes his blood go cold as his skin. Having even on person know what Nero has done to him is shaming enough he doesn't need thousands knowing. ] I-I don't know. My life isn't, isn't that exciting that it would be made into a work of fiction.

You'd be surprised about what they write stories of.

[The claims of his supposed fictionality were bothersome to Lupin too, though not for the same horror. He was a secretive man at heart, for all of his ego--anyone unnecessary knowing about his plans irritated him to no end.]

Oh I've read many stories in my world. Legends and myths and folklore about all sorts of things. A woman who lives in a house made of Romanian pastries out in the forest and tries to eat young children.

[ A sigh. ] I'm not entirely surprised if they've written things about me as well. [ Nothing good his tone suggests. ] I wonder if reading things like that would change how we acted. Y-You know seeing it before it happens and the like. Or, or even just getting a secondary view on how we have behaved.

Hansel and Gretel...Never heard of it being made of Romanian pastries before! [Joking aside--]

You'd be better off asking Luke Skywalker on that one. From what I understand, anything we do here will be forgotten, but Luke went off and watched all six of the movies that were made in my world about the lives of his father and himself. It's quite a mythic arc, but it must be odd.

...records of my grandfather's accomplishments exist in my world too, written by his quiet confidant Maurice Leblanc. In most worlds it seems that Leblanc was just an author, though...so my grandfather, and myself, are fiction there.

It's pretty wierd to think about, actually.

A Romanian deviation. There's always a different version of such stories in other places. Sometimes they're darker or happier than modern day versions. [ He shrugs on his end. ] I suppose it's just how the translation pans out a-and of course the culture that takes up the story. [ Social norms are different in other countries after all. What might not be accepted in America might be in Romania. ]

Ah, yes, I remember that. [ Helios shakes his head. ] Luceti is always changing people's perceptions and thoughts on things. I suppose this is just another aspect of that.

It probably is. So, whatever your deal is, try not to think too hard about it. This place seems to be a nexus of worlds anyway, so anything is possible.

I-I know. You're absolutely right. S-Sorry. I just...think a bit too much for my own good sometimes I suppose. [ A tired little chuckle. His musing might also be because of his physical state. He's not really at his best at the moment so you can't really blame him, can you? Then again Lupin probably doesn't know and he can't fault the other for that. ]

There's nothing wrong with thinking, it's just a matter of doing something with the thinking. In this kind of place, though? These questions could be a little maddening.

[While he doesn't know Helios' current condition, he does know madness. It was why he valiantly resisted searching for a snow cone machine in the item shops--the people of CH 5 didn't need to deal with his answeres to too many questions and boredom.]

People ask questions like this all the time. It's...almost normal for this place as I'm sure you've seen. But madness isn't very common for here even with all the craziness that goes on.

[ A sigh. He's going to be bed ridden for awhile but only if Adele catches him which he is hoping that she won't be home. ] D-Do you know...where Adele is by any chance?

I have noticed. [It was a part of why he was going slightly stir crazy. The worst of it was months ago, but the inherent wanderlust was still there. In a place this static, he had nothing to do except cause chaos or wait it out.] Makes me appreciate the resiliance of humanity.

[Resiliant, but on occasion worrisome. Lupin furrows his brows at the odd question.] I don't. Is there a reason?

It's a strange sort of place, really. No one ever really wanting things to happen b-because they're sometimes rather bad. But the peace never usually lasts forever unfortunately.

[ Sometimes he rather not have anything happen here even if it got stagnant or boring. ] Oh n-no I was just...wondering if she was at the house or not.

[ Because he is going to sneak inside and try to heal himself then. Buuut you know. ]

I don't keep track of her movements all the time, Helios. Sorry that I can't help you there. [Although, if the current pattern continued, he may end up keeping track of Adele just to keep her safe. It was starting to become apparent that the woman had terribly bad luck, and it was dangerous.]

...in honesty, I'd rather something happened rather than nothing, even if its bad. its better than waiting. Hate waiting.

Oh it's, it's no problem. I-I was just curious is all. [ Well he could just take a chance and head back then. It's not as if he has much to lose in those regards. ]

You were quite the active individual back at home then? I-I can understand that. I...did love to travel back home even if it was mainly f-for work purposes.

...Very active. Travel is something I do for both work and pleasure, and I have to say its one of the things I don't like around here. I miss my job. A lot.

Mm I can certainly relate t-to the traveling I mean. I-I don't know what kind of job you had but I doubt it was very boring if it had you moving about all the time. [ A sigh. ] Seeing all those new places and people was always something I loved doing back home. I could just spend weeks going around the globe if I had the time. It's strange not being able to go to another compound but knowing that they do exist.

[ It worries him and makes him wish he could do more to help those other places, especially if they were in positions like the one he just visited. ]

There is always the option of doing those Missions, you know. Gets you out, can see some wacky things.

...I was on that one on the boat recently. Who would have thought that Krakens really exist?

Oh y-yes I know. I t-took it with the knowledge of knowing that. [ And he hardly regrets his decision in doing so. ]

I've met them a few times back in my own world. [ He says that jokingly or as jokingly as he can muster at the moment. There is a smile in his tone which turns sour as he thinks on those new types of shifters...the things you see on missions indeed. People need to be warned about them most definitely. ] You do get to...see things you wouldn't normally during them, hm? Even, even in this mission there were things encountered I had yet to see, despite being here for t-two years.

[ Somethings he would not like to encounter again. ]

So you just got back from a mission, Helios? [Was that part of his reasoning for asking after Adele?] What sort was it? What kind of things did you see?

[Not Krakens, obviously. He didn't want to get anywhere near Helios' world if there were krakens there!]

Y-Yes I, ah, did actually. Just t-today. [ Does he sound tired? Because gods he is. There's a pause for several seconds on his end. ] It was...protecting an enclosure like this one from, from the third party.

[ Another abrupt pause as he considers his words over this network. It's probably better to not speak about certain things over this. ] There were...p-people there, like us, we had to protect them. We-we did our best in terms of that but still the third party had...I-I don't know. I'm not sure I should say over these journals, I apologize.

[Lupin understood the reasons entirely--discretion was always the best policy when speaking about anything over the journals.]

We can talk about it later if you like, in person. Get coffee or something. You should probably get yourself settled if you just got back today.

[ Discretion, yes. Helios isn't sure who might be listening in on these things and he doesn't have the best track record when it comes to electronics anyway. ]

That, that would be for the best I believe. I-I'll be sure to do so. [ He's rather tired as it were so he's not going to deny the statement of getting settled. ]

Coffee sometime then, but there's no hurry. We have nothing but time here, after all.

Sometime soon then. It-it should probably be soon. [ Because these new types of warriors are a bit unnerving the more people who know about them the better prepared they can all be.

But Helios doubts that what happened in the enclosure he was in will happen here. Or his optimism will not allow him to give in to such thoughts. ]

[He doesn't know Helios well, but there's something about that tone that makes Lupin wonder if there's information that's more sensitive than he though on the man's mind. Lupin doesn't ask about it just yet, but mentally clears his all ready clear schedule.]

Anytime then. Whenever you're ready--just take care of yourself first.

Of course. Thank you I-I will. [ Mostly he will. He does get absentminded with that sort of thing after all. ] I'll...be sure to contact you soon about it.

[ Despite not knowing the other very well Helios feels that telling anyone about this is a good idea. It's not information that should be withheld from people. ]
