folklorist | ϡ - Chapter Sixteen; this is halloween [voice/action]

Halloween...Halloween. [ He sounds contemplative and hums a little before continuing. ] What to say about it. [ A pause there's the sounds of something be unwrapped probably a candy knowing Helios's sweet tooth. Then almost automatically there's the sound of 'mmm' in the silent background. How has he not gotten a cavity yet? ] I do hope the ghosts in the castle behave themselves this year. They love playing practical jokes around this time...April Fools isn't any better. [ Damn ghost kids always making trouble for him! Good thing he doesn't have to deal with it this year, haha! Though Ra might light the castle on fire... ] Ah...best to not think of such things. [ He'll just clear his throat because oh the horror, his poor castle. ] I distinctly recall that Halloween's roots go back to Samhain and the Celtic festival held in light of that. But today it's widely distributed and practiced pretty much everywhere. Samhain is...er Gaelic for summer's end. It was originally a harvest festival as they were generally more prominent back in the day you know? [ He laughs. ] What with farming relying on the sun Samhain was the end of the lighter half of the season and the beginning of the darker one. Something like day lights savings time or the summer and winter solstices.

Ah but! There's a catch! Many people believe that on this day the border between the living and dead became so thin that spirits could cross over and thus allowed the dead to cross back over from the living world into their own. This event brought up the custom of wearing costumes and masks which people did back then to help ward off the spirits and were used them to calm them down. I'd imagine pumpkin carving came from the old tradition of carving faces into turnips to ward off evil spirits as well.

It's such a wonderful holiday, very rich in folklore and the transition into modern culture is fascinating! The story of Mongfind for example is a folktale for this specific holiday. Modern times has done away with most of that but you know...the spirits of our deceased are always passing over, perhaps more so on that day than most. [ That's totally not a creepy thought nope. He's actually perfectly neutral in saying that it must be the dork in him. ] Ah what typically goes on here during Halloween, trick or treating I would hope? Oh! Perhaps a haunted house or a walk through the woods would definately be eerie. The spirits don't seem to be acting any differently though. [If you only knew what was in store for you Helios. ] Hm...I do wonder if the indigenous population here even knew what it was. There's just so much we don't know about this place. [ Sighs. So many questions yet so little answers. But back to the treats... ] But the best part about Halloween is...the candy! [ He sounds like a five year old don't mind him. ] What's everyone's favorite type? You can never go wrong with having too many favorites either!

[He nods and looks off to the side.

This is the mighty country of Poland: this blushing and shy person right beside you.]

[ Aw that's adorable. Helios will just smile and go back to looking at the various candies. Until he turns to Poland once more. ] Which ones are your favorite? I love chocolate myself but anything sweet it good enough for me. Ah, it's a weakness of mine for sure. [ He just laughs a little smiling all the while. ]

[You're expecting him to talk? Well, it takes him a few moments to say anything, but he does.] I...like food, so all chocolates are good to me. [He picks up a bar of sesame chocolate.] But I really like this.

[ YES! Well he gets that your shy so he won't push you to talk if you don't want. His gaze will follow Poland's actions. ] I've had that once before, it's positively delicious!

[He'll talk since you are Frederic's roommate and he feels like he should know you. And well, you do seem pretty nice, Helios.] Totally, right? I eat these all the time back at home and stuff.

[ Helios is nice and he's happy you're at least talking. It's always nice to know more about your friend's country. ] You wouldn't expect chocolate and something healthy to go very well together, but things have a way of surprising you! Like chocolate covered fruit it's simply delicious!

[You are very friendly. It's kind of hard to stay shy around you. Poland's still shy, but talking isn't so hard.] I totally love chocolate covered cherries.

[ That's good! It is an improvement then. Helios will definately nod in agreement at that. ] Chocolate covered strawberries are to die for as well. Ah bananas too. I think the consensus is anything paired with chocolate can be delicious.

Oh gosh, all this talk of chocolate is like, totally making my mouth water like whoa. [Eying his chocolate. Why is he still in this store when he can be eating chocolate?]

You're right about that. [ He is eying his as well. ] I wonder if they have a fondue set here. [ He will have to investigate later. ] Ah if you'd like you can come over if you wish. I'm sure we could get Frederic to share some of our chocolate if we ask him together. [ He isn't scheming really. ]

[Fondue...that sounds delicious. But the part about Frederic makes him a little curious.] Is he like, not eating chocolate or something...? [Is such blasphemy true?!]

I don't think so. [ He frowns, he shares the same sentiments as you do Feliks. ] I haven't seen him eat that many sweets since his moving in to be honest. It needs to be rectified I think.

It totally does! We like, need to do something about it! [And he will make him eat sweets! Because this is important to him for some strange reason.]

[ Helios nods his head rubbing his chin in conjunction with the action. ] Yes we certainly do, don't we? [ Because candy is one of the food groups obviously. ] I think there is only one thing to be done.

What do you like, think we should do? [You have him on bated breath, Helios.]

Well... [ He thinks for a few moments rubbing his chin. ] I think we should persuade him into trying some!

Yeah, let's do that! I bet I could like, get him to try something! [He's too stubborn otherwise. Plus there is the whole 'I am your country' thing.]

It's settled then. It's for his own good. [ He says this with affirmation nodding his head. ]

He can't like, truly be happy until he has some sweets. This is totally for his own good and stuff. [Poland sounds very serious. He's hardly serious, but now he is. What a thing to be serious about.]

I completely agree! I think everyone should try them at least once in their lifetime, actually. [ Helios is chuckling at how serious you're taking this. ]

[Frederic is as good as a national hero in Poland and so he will be happy and have some candy if it's the last thing Poland will do!] He's like, way too serious. Candy'll help him.

He has been a bit down as of late hasn't he? I think it'll do him some good! Candy makes everyone feel better! [ No it doesn't but this is Helios and he's a derp. ]

Yeah, he totally has. He needs to like, cheer up and stuff. Maybe candy will help if he can't talk or something. [Don't worry, Helios. Poland is too.]

[ Helios nods as he goes to procure some more chocolates and other sweets, taking care to get a wide variety of things. ] He's bound to like one of these things...but, ah, shall we go then?
