folklorist: (Never seen anything like it)

It has, most definitely. But as for the term jack-o-lantern I believe it's derived from a series of stories. In each one a man by the name of Jack beguiles the Devil, trapping him in a number of ways, and only freeing him once the Devil agreed to not take his soul once he passed on. It's then said that once Jack had passed on that because of his agreement with the Devil he could not find a resting spot in the after life. Jack wasn't a very good man either and thus couldn't get into heaven or hell. So he carved out one of his turnips and using an ember that the Devil gave him from the flames of hell to wander the Earth looking for a resting place. And that's where the term jack-o-lantern is said to come from!
