ϡ - Chapter ThirtyFive; this is not how you bake a pretty cake [Action (for House 44)|Voice|Video]
[ The journal feed turns on to a kitchen with a pot of something on the stove boiling, steaming, something is cooking in there but what? Who knows! ] Ah! There we go I think it’s on! Still get confused with this thing...
[ Helios will clear his throat and then pull away only for people to see one blond headmaster smiling into the video feed as he gives a slight wave. ] Yes. I think we can get started now. The sugar might burn otherwise...
I found an interesting little book in the library today. How to make various candies from my world! There’s one that I’ve always enjoyed, rather interesting these, I can't believe I actually found how to make them. They’re called Pop Rocks.
[ And then he beams. ] I’ve never done a cooking demonstration before! This is quite exciting. Oh! Yes! And my assistant will be the ever so helpful Ms. LeBlanc. [ He’ll just pan the journal camera over to Adele then. He'll keep it there so they're both in view now with the ingredients off to the side on the table. There's the rustling of pages as Helios flips through his cook book. ]
So! The first thing you'll need to do is dust a cookie sheet with the powdered sugar, and sprinkle a generous amount of the Citric Acid on the sugar.
[ Adele, dutifully, waves from where she is standing just behind Helios. She is conspicuously keeping him between her and the stove. Just in case.
She can't shake the feeling it won't end well. ]
Citric acid? That is... [ First goes down a layer of powdered sugar, and she searches the side table for the acid. ] This. Yes?
Mm yes that's it. [ Helios does not notice this at all, nope. He is just being his absentminded excited self with this. ]
And then we have to combine two cups of sugar, some water and a one third cup of corn syrup into the saucepan. Setting it over medium heat and stirring it gently. [ A slight pout. Medium heat? That just won't do. Helios can be a bit impatient when it comes to sweets, especially when cooking them, so what's a little more added heat he's done it plenty of times before! ] Hm. I think we can make it a little bit hotter. Magic comes in handy when you cook, you know? A nice controlled very hot fire. It should speed up the cooking just a little bit.
[ That is such a bad idea Helios. But still he looks over at Adele to make the appropriate measurements. ]
The instructions are as they are for a reason Helios. Medium heat is medium heat.
[ Yes, she's. Keeping him between her and the stove. But she does pour out two cups of sugar and hands it off to him. Then the water. Then...it takes some time for her to pour the syrup from the bottle. ]
...you really should follow the directions. You always impress upon me the importance of doing so elsewhere.
[ Helios waves her off. As he puts all the necessary ingredients into said pot which then he will begin to stir slowly. ] It'll be fine Adele. I do it all the time! It's not that much different, really, just a slight temperature change. It usually never hurts with the recipes I've used before.
[ Here the camera will catch Helios' eyes glowing and he'll give a small snap on his fingers. The fire underneath the pot will flare up a little but aside from that it looks normal...for now. ] See? Nothing wrong.
Then use the stove's controls instead of magic? There is a knob for it. Right there. There is no need to-
[ And he snaps his fingers anyway. Adele sighs and crosses her arms, waiting. ]
But I've been trying to perfect this way of cooking. Completely magical just to see if it can be done. I want to see if it changes anything about the food prepared. Like, like the flavoring, texture those sort of thing. I do always like to try different ways to go about things, there’s so many one can cook something after all. But, yes, the next step. [ Stirring, stirring, stirring. Helios will continue to do this and hum a little. ]
You should stir it until the syrup starts to boil. And then you place a thermometer in the pot, without it touching the sides or bottom, and let the syrup continue to boil until it gets to around three hundred and five degrees then we'll add a teaspoon of Baking Soda...
[ He will turn to go and get the candy thermometer on the table and. At this point there will be some multi-colored sparks issuing out from beneath the pot. They are not normal looking in the least and Helios will turn back around only to notice this with some well concealed alarm. ] Oh. Gods. That um...that's isn't supposed to happen.
[ And then comes the smoke...which dilutes the camera's view a considerable degree. ]
Perhaps you can try it with recipe that doesn't involve molten sugar?
[ Still. She hands over the thermometer and baking soda. She's eyeing the fire with some caution and as soon as she sees that spark she steps back. ] Helios...
[ Smoke, then? She drops, reaching up only to yank at his arm to pull him down with her. ] Merde
Yes. You might be right. M-maybe I sh-shouldn't have used sugar... [ This is going to be dreadful to get out of everything...oh good lord. Helios jumps slightly when Adele grabs his arm because that is a tension point and this is a point of great tension right now. The smoke is rather thick almost completely blotting out the journal’s camera but anyone watching can still sort of make out the headmaster and surgeon. The sparks only get more numerous and the pot they are spewing out from under rattles on the stove. ] A-Adele. I-I think we-we should-
[ Leave. And before the rest can be said there is a very loud bang which rattles the windows slightly and the camera is now covered by a thick blanket of black smoke. Cooking with magic attempt one: Unsuccessful. Oh and welcome to Luceti new feathers. This is a wonderful first impression, clearly! ]
((ooc; Blue is Adele. Green is Helios! Put down whether you want both of them to respond or just Adele/Helios! ))

BOTH [voice]
ai-yah~
Tell me there's no bodies over there, all right? Seriously...you guys are nuts.
[voice]
[voice]
[ Helios will finally respond to Lupin. ] Yes we're alright. Th-thank you for asking. Nothing to worry about.
[ Because as Adele might realize there is a nicely placed barrier around them which has successfully blocked any projectile sugar that might have been sent flying. ]
[voice]
You're doing it again. We talked about this before, remember?
....I'm on my way. 44, right? [Like he needed to ask...]
[voice]
Oui Lupin, 44. Do not wear shoes you are fond of. This is...everywhere. Merde.
[voice]
[ Gods it was everywhere. He wouldn't make Adele clean it up though. No, no. This was his mess and he'd clean it himself. ] I-I'll clean it up.
[voice]
I'm not wearing anything I'm fond of, thanks. And I'm bringing soap.
Lots of it.
[Then, lighter:] I don't mind, really. [It gives him something to do between training and reading.]
[voice]
[She'd forgotten. How could she have forgotten? She sighs, considers her next action for a moment, and then scoots over to hook an arm around his waist since she could not reach his shoulders. Just. A one armed hug. That was terribly awkward. But, it should get the point across. Or it could make him even more uncomfortable. She really should let go and learn not to touch him at all, under any circumstances, ever.]
No one is hurt, it's a mess easily cleaned. You are forgiven. And since I did not have the good sense to protest this foolishness, I will help.
[action]
[ He frowns. ] I-I should have listened to you. I just...I just wanted to try something. I shouldn't have done it with you in the room and possibly in danger. For that I apologize. [ Always the curiosity getting the best of him. It always does. ]
[action]
He has his reasons.]
[action]
Helios; I've been shot. A little hot sugar isn't going to kill me. As it is we are fortunate we are not burned, but you may continue to feel as guilty as you like after we finish cleaning the kitchen. Guilt is a terrible motivator, trust me. I know.
[By the time Lupin arrives Adele's managed to get the worst of it off of one counter, scraping and peeling the strands off bit by bit. Her own discomfort was ignored. Even if the pulling at her wings was irritating and distracting.]
[action]
But I-I shouldn't have do so with you in the room. I'll remember that for next time. [ Another cough or two before a gentle wind begins to push the smoke out of the way. Actually it might look like it's all being gather into a giant black condensed ball. Helios after disposing of it out through the window will be helping Adele.
He'll be watching her silently and then noting her wings. Something was rather off about them. ]
[action]
Hellooo~~ PS's Cleaning Service!
[action]
Go let Lupin in, please? There is a gob of this stuck under the cabinet. [And it's hard to reach without pulling at. Something. That was on her back that caused those little shivers of irritation.]
[action]
Helios sighs and stands. ] I'll be right back then.
[ He goes without really seeing her feathers just yet. And when he gets to the door Helios will be the one to greet Lupin with a small strained smile. ] Ah. Th-thank you for, for helping. I do appreciate it, really. Um c-come in.
[action]
[It's best not to ask how he knows. He breezes in and deposits the bucket and cleaners somewhere that looks moderately safe. The broom never leaves his hands. He whistles, long and low, at the sight of everything.] Maaaaannn guys! This is one helluva mess!
[action]
The gob of sugar she was trying to work loose with water and willpower came free and she jerked back, wings flaring to slow her momentum. Or rather they would have if they hadn't been stuck together.]
Merde!
[action]
[ His track record is not the best, okay? But it was really supposed to be harmless! Helios honestly hadn't thought to ask about Lupin's chosen cleaning service name. And honestly it's probably because he's still a bit frazzled and he always is, forever, absentminded at times especially at times like these. But now that he thinks on it...
Strange name. PS only has so many meanings. ] Yes. Um. D-Do we want to know? [ Oh dear. It was something bad wasn't it? ]
[action]
He smiles.]
Arrange around the letter of my name and you have a completely different one. PS are the initials. It's nothing bad, but keep it quiet if you figure it out.
[action]
[A beat.] I should have known it was something to that effect. I will tell no one should I sort it out.
[action]
It's s-starting to harden somewhat. [ There's a small grunt as he goes to scrap some off the kitchen sink to at least get a bucket filled with water. If it fails, which it likely has, he'll just use magic to fill it up instead. ] Shack, yes, next time I'll certainly use that...
[action]
[It was no bother to him, leaving clues around to his games. It made it more fun, more exciting.
He joins them, hand still firmly grasped on the handle of the broom, and a look of amused mockery on his face.]
Water. You'll want soap and water eventually, so we may as well get to it now. Adele? We're gonna need help with this sink...
[action]
[Peeling herself from the floor takes time, and making her way around the gobs and strands of rapidly hardening sugar takes a little more, especially with the odd pull and twist at her back. Still she makes it in time and starts rummaging around for a bucket underneath.]
[action]
Ah. Y-Yes I...I don't think... [ it'll help all that much but he doesn't say it. He just looks at it once more before he goes to the sink as well. He'll be standing to the left of Adele when he notices it then. Her wings were oddly positioned now that he thought about it. He'll lean in closer gasping little. ] A-Adele your...your wings!
[ Oh. Oh dear. ] You have some, um, s-sugar on them.
[action]
It didn't matter at the moment. They were in position.
Grinning madly, he whacks both of them lightly over the head with the bristled end of the broom. Then:]
Now, both of you stop, calm down, and think. [He props the broom back up and leans on it as if it were a cane, for gravitas.]
Adele. Go take a shower, you're covered in sugar. Helios. I have a bucket in the other room, go get it. I'll get the sink working.
